BISHOP SAYS AVOID GAMBLING

Spero News reports that religious leaders in the Philippines, including the Catholic leader, have signed a joint statement opposing gambling, even the legal variety:

The statement asks people not to indulge in gambling of any sort including the legal Small Town Lottery, which operators licensed by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes have started in Bataan and other northern provinces.

In their statement, the religious leaders wrote that gambling destroys the person and society because it breeds laziness and dependence on luck rather than hard work for livelihood. They also pointed out that it is a "sin" to operate a gambling facility and to earn one's living through gambling.

Meanwhile in America the bingo games continue, and a Catholic youth ministry convention is scheduled for Las Vegas.
